Nate came to Texas from the Great Conservative North of Spokane, Washington for a few of reasons, but near the top was the Texas ethos embodied by good folks (and real Democrats) like Barbara Jordan, Ann Richards, and Jim Hightower. His friends and family warned him of the dangers of the land of Rick Perry and Kay Bay Huch, but he knew that same land was home to good people, good music, and (every so often) great leaders. When he first heard about Kinky Friedman's run for governor in the winter of 2005, he knew just such a great leader had come along. He's been an active and enthusiastic supporter since then. He started and remains active in the Students for Kinky group at the University of North Texas. He is studying Philosophy and Political Science, and when he grows up he wants to be the "save the world" kind of lawyer (as opposed to the "buy a boat" kind). Political affiliation? Despite the above mentioned heros, he's still not comfortable with the whole "Democrat" label. You can call him a liberal, but he thinks the more homegrown "populist" is a better fit.

Of Hearts, Streets, and Airports: Nate Signs Off

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

“Now that the campaign is stopped, I’m going to say something that all of you have heard me say before. But I want you to think about it now because now is the most important time that you have heard it. And this is the real message of this campaign and you’ll hear it in a different way because I am no longer a candidate.”

He then repeated the key closing line of his stump speech: “The biggest lie that people like me tell people like you at election time is that, If you vote for me, I’ll solve your problems. The truth is the power is in your hands, not mine.”

No, really… how hard could it be?

Kinky has known from the begining people would try and shut him out. But the fact is, he is a funny man with serious plans. If he loses (and given the turn out we’ve seen so far, that might be a big if) because the two party system mobilized its most despicable tactics and we fell for them again, does that mean politics is too hard? That we should leave it to the big boys?

Please! Somewhere James Madison is throwing up. Should we leave it to the big boys!? Of course not! It means we should fight even harder for sensible campaigns and reasonable government so this kind of crap doesn’t happen!

Whose ill will?
